ABA – Perugia

The Pietro Vannucci Academy of Fine Arts, originally the Academy of Drawing, is one of Italy's oldest highest institutes of artistic education.

A new statute, approved on 9 March 2003, established the “Pietro Vannucci” Academy of Fine Arts Foundation, whose founding members are the Municipality and the Province of Perugia. The main goals pursued by the institution are the protection and enhancement of the vast historical-artistic heritage and the activity of artistic education. The Academy is governed by a Board of Directors composed of the President of the Foundation, four councilors elected by the Academic Body, including the Conservator of the assets, two councilors appointed by the Municipality, a councilor appointed by the Province, a councilor appointed jointly by supporting members. The Academic Body comprises one hundred and fifty Academicians of Merit and as many Academicians d’Onore, elected by the same body on the proposal of a special commission made up of the President of the Foundation and eight members elected from within the Academic Body.

The Academics of Merit are selected among the artists who have distinguished themselves in different artistic expressions, while the Academics of Honor are chosen among those who have distinguished themselves in the field of culture and science or among those who have been worthy of the Academy itself. The Register of Academics of Merit boasts a long list of illustrious names (from Pablo Picasso to Alberto Burri, from Enrico Castellani to Renzo Piano), as the register boasts of Honorary Academicians (from Guglielmo Calderini to Arturo Checchi, from Pietro Angelini to Gerardo Dottori).

Professor selection is by public competition or national ranking to ensure a high level of teaching e of educational offer that respects the centuries-old tradition of the institution. Among the teachers who have taught in recent decades include scholars such as Filiberto Menna, Nello Ponente, Dante Filippucci, Pio Baldelli, Federico Mancini, Fabrizio Bracco, Franco Federici, Stefano Miccolis, Bruno Corà and architects and artists such as Bruno Signorini, Adelmo Maribelli, Father Diego Donati, Romeo Mancini, Giorgio Ascani Nuvolo, Eliseo Mattiacci, Edgardo Abbozzo, Antonio Gatto, Gianni Sani, Sergio Sani, Adriano Urbano, Gianfran- co Ercolanoni and Sauro Cardinali.
